::week 6::
[nearing the term's end]

It's hard to believe that six weeks have gone by so quickly. I'm now ready for six more...Liann? Viki? lol

This week we were to create a logo and identity package of letterhead, envelope & business card for New Dawn Healthcare. This is a home care company whos main target client is the elderly, although others who have home care needs would be serviced. The sale of services would be mainly to the adult children of seniors needing some help at home.

[view client questionnaire here]

I started thinking about this and I am their sales target. I am in the described age range [though we won't say where in it ;-] and with a parent in her mid-70's. Although she is in excellent health at this point, there will come a time that this is not true. Sad to say, or to even think about, but aging is a truth for all of us who are lucky enough to survive more than a few years.

This started me thinking about what would make a good first impression on me if I were shopping for home healthcare for a parent. The image would be different from a hospital which I expect to be all business. For homecare, I would want an experienced and knowledgeable professional, of course, however, I would be looking for something that gave me a warm fuzzy feeling. Like being cuddled. What I would wish for myself or my mother would be someone who was not only a paid professional, but also a companion. Someone who might bake her some chocolate chip cookies or stop to brush her hair or do her nails when one of us could not be there to do it for her. Attention to little details and kindness' that go above and beyond the bare job essentials.

With that in mind, a cold and efficient image would be rather a turn off for me. Something softer with a tiny bit of humor or lightness would probably win my heart. That teal and rose combination the client suggested just looks horrible to me. When it is in darker values it looks cold and lighter it looks goofy. I think this may be just a personal thing as, in the mid-80's I did my condo in a rosy mauve and there were teal accents in pillows, vases, etc. It did not take me long to get extremely sick of those colors...ugh!!! Thank goodness this lady is open to some other ideas. I'll start fiddling and see what evolves...maybe I can use one or the other, but NOT together. lol

I would be checking references and credentials on anyone, but that first impression is what we are talking about here. The little something that would make me want to follow through with a face to face meeting with a representative of a home healthcare agency. A real gut reaction.

I went looking at different healthcare logos and websites. What is it with all the trees? There seem to be trees at every turn.

march of dimes logoA logo that is not technically *healthcare* came to mind immediately. That is the little drawing representing a mother and child that is used by the March of Dimes [http://www.modimes.org]. Although not exactly the same situation, the feeling I am looking for is there. I have seen it used both with and without text and in various colors and situations. It speaks volumes to me without saying a word. The message is one of love, nurturing and caring. Now if I could only think of something with this beautiful simplicity. *sigh*

Here are some simple logos that were in someway related to elder health care that I found attractive:

This logo is used in several ways on their site. If you check their site, you will see that this has been used in several ways including one with more effects suitable for web viewing, not print. Simple logos can be changed like that and still be highly identifiable.

Now, before I head over to my examples and ideas I want to thank my classmate, Gloria, for adding a link to the US Postal Service's template and requirements for envelope size and print/text placement. I hope that she does not mind if I grab it and add it hear as well. I am afraid I will lose it if I don't make note of it in several places. And I always forget about those silly barcode stickers and printouts they now insist on adding randomly.

Thanks again for a wonderful resource link, Gloria! *grin*

And, Liann & Viki, what can I say? I really loved this class!! Many thanks to both of you for the time and planning that you put into creating it. Now gimme more, more, more!!!
